Essay 1

                                                                                Nuclear power energy in UAE

No doubt that Nuclear power in the United Arab Emirates is to some a modern matter. However, it will play an important role in all the life aspects of the Emiratis. The nuclear power energy started in the world early in 1894 and it has been started in the UAE since 2007. Nuclear power station will be completed in the UAE by the year of 2020.

In United Arab Emirates generation of electricity depends mainly on the natural gas and imported materials such as coal. The UAE produces 90.6 billion kwh yearly. ‘‘Electricity demand is growing by 9% per year and is expected to require 40 GWe of capacity by 2020”  St, James's (March 2013). All the fields of development depend on electricity, in addition to the UAE relies completely on electricity to provide potable water by desalination. Consequently, the supplies of natural gas will not be sufficient to produce what the country needs from electricity. Hence, the UAE had to search for new sources of electricity.

Nowadays the electric energy can’t face the future demands which increases as the country witnesses, a great revolution in all fields of development so there were no options for the government to start establishing nuclear power station that can supply the country with the necessary electric power. The government of the UAE has studied all the aspects and the influences of the project before giving the permission of these new nuclear stations. H.H Sheikh Khalifa, president of the UAE issued his federal low in 2009 regarding the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the United Arab Emirates. Korea has agreed to build the first nuclear power plant in United Arab Emirates which had to be established in Barakah area about 280 km west of Abu Dhabi and this nuclear power plant will start to supply the country with electric power in 2017.

The topic started when the UAE invited nine companies to take part in constructing the first nuclear power plant in the UAE. But three companies only discussed the terms in the middle of 2009. After that the UAE had to inform the IAEA it is desire to join the IAEA convention on nuclear safety. A group of South Korean firms has chosen to build the nuclear power plant in the UAE and H.H Sheikh Khalifa, president of the UAE signed the contract with the president of South Korean the contract states that the group of South Korean firms has to build four power station in the United Arab Emirates and the project will be completed in 2020. And the construction of these fore power plants would cost the United Arab Emirates about ( Dh 73.47 billon ) paid to the south Korean group firms. The United Arab Emirates is considered the first Arab country to start building nuclear power plant which is used in peace purposes and generating electricity in the region of the Middle East. The Barakah plant has been constructing since 2012. The United Arab Emirates government does its best to meet increasing demand for electricity in the future and they wanted to secure the country against any shortage of electricity in the future.

Above all, the nuclear power energy will help the country in many different fields. In addition, it’s pure energy as it does not pollute the environment. These power plants will enable the United Arab Emirates to have a good position among the advanced countries of the world. The nuclear power energy will give the UAE chance to widen its industrial projects, consequently, the country will increase its exports to all the countries worldwide and at the same time the imports of the country will be reduced. On the economical level the United Arab Emirates will witness great progress in all the fit fields.

Essay 2

                                                Story of stuff

Pollution of the environment has involved a lot of people worldwide. The progress and development of many countries have led to increasing house hold consumption in addition to increasing the process of manufacturing. Although the process of manufacturing materials is important to provide people’s need, it has serious and bad impacts on our environment whether during the process of manufacturing or after the use of the new products. There are five parts of the process which are linked to consumerism.

Extraction:

Cutting down the forests trees to use their wood in different purposes may give us clear evidence that man uses the earth resources severely. The “Story of stuff” (2007) shows that people need three to five planets to face the human needs of these products. The process of extraction affects the environment badly from the point of cutting down the trees to get wood until burning them to get coal for manufacturing. Burning the coal releases carbon dioxide which helps increase the global warming.

Production:

During the stage of production we have to use energy to make things for sale. That means a lot of our products contain toxin. “From the foods we eat to how we maintain our yards and clean our homes, we can be exposed to chemicals in many ways” (Colborn, 2004). For example, chemicals are used to make vegetables grow better and faster. Hence, these vegetables contain toxin which affects consumers’ health badly consequently, this creates many dangerous problems.

Distribution

Distribution is an important step as in this stage products are distributed and sold to the customers. Some of these products are dangerous because they are poisonous. These products are sold to families. These toxic products should be treated in a safe way so as to avoid their harm.

Consumption

Consumption of products adds to the problem because people use the products and continue buying stuff. Factories and shopping centers concentrate on consumers as they are the main source of getting money. From time to time consumers like to change some of what they own as they became old fashion. With the help of hard sell and soft sell advertisements people may change their minds and buy new products. For example, some costumers sell their old TV sets and buy new flat screen TV sets. The factories and companies work hard to persuade people to buy new products.

Disposal

How can people get rid of their old products? It may be burnt and dumped in landfills. However, burning the old products is too serious which creates poisonous materials. “Residents of Connecticut, reusing or recycling these items can reduce the amount and toxicity of the garbage that is disposed in our state” (Dannel, 2013).

Consumerism in the UAE

The UAE is one of the most developing countries in its region and it is witnessing a great industrial revolution and this in its turn increases the amount of carbon toxic to the environment. Also there are sources which add more carbon toxic such as house hold. These sources increase the problem of releasing carbon toxic to the environment. Hence the UAE had to find successful solutions for this problem. Firstly, the government tries hard to make people have special awareness to the global issues. Secondly, the UAE government has started establishing the first city in the whole world which is free from carbon toxic. Above all the UAE government takes wide steps in exploiting the clear and clean renewable energy. “Clean energy includes energy efficiency and clean energy supply options like highly efficient combined heat and power as well as renewable energy sources” (Clean Energy, 2013). Moreover the UAE urges people to use public transport to save burning so much petrol so as to reduce carbon toxin.

In conclusion, the issue of consumption comes at first as it causes different kinds of pollution. So we have to think deeply of things that increase consumption and raise the rate of global warming and pollution. We must do our best to reduce the amount of things that creates a great amount of carbon toxin so as to be happy as the amount of pollution will be reduced.
